Adding Captions to Videos

Administrators and video owners can add closed captions to videos and live streams.  Viewers can use the Search Videos tool to find videos by phrases in their captions.

Access the video's view page :

  • Administrators select Administer > Content Management > Videos - Edit and click View for the desired video.
  • Content owners select Manage > My Videos and click the video's thumbnail.

Uploading Caption Files

You can attach SubRip Text (SRT) or Distribution Format Exchange Profile (DFXP) files to videos to provide closed captioning for the video.

  1. Under Captions, browse for the SRT or DFXP file.
  2. Select the language of the caption file.
  3. Click Add captions.
  4. Repeat for all the languages you support.

Adding Captions Manually to Videos

  1. Click Caption Video.
  2. Select the language of the captions.
  3. Click Start caption.
  4. Select the Classic or Timeline interface.
  5. Click Add caption at current time.
  6. Enter the caption for the specified time period.
  7. Click Save.
  8. Repeat steps 5 through 7 for the rest of the video.
  9. Click Save Draft to save your work.  It is not yet available to viewers.
  10. Click Publish Captions to make them available to viewers.

TIP: When adding captions, press the down arrow on your keyboard to start the video and press it again to stop it and highlight the text entry box. Use the Offset option to adjust the timing of captions already entered. The caption start and end times are adjusted forward by the offset you enter, as are entries below the adjusted entry.

The captions are saved in an XML file listed below Captions and you can delete them at any time.

Adding Captions to Live Streams

  1. Click to view the live stream.
  2. Click Caption Video.
  3. Select the language of the captions.
  4. Click Start caption.
  5. Enter a caption.
  6. Click Show.
  7. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for the next segments of the video.
  8. Click Stop caption.

When the recording completes, you can review and publish the captions on the video page by selecting Caption Video.
